Collaborative Project《Hwang’s Manual of Song’s Work – Throwing Arrows》, 2023

 This exhibitional Project is supported by Incheon Art Platform Residency as a part of an Artist Project and presents Kyumin Hwang’s ongoing Hwabo project, created through a fictional persona named “Hwang,” who analyzes and imitates contemporary artworks using a system inspired by traditional painting manuals like The Mustard Seed Garden Manual. In this edition, Hwang focuses on the work of Jean Song, whose ink-based practice explores overlooked ecological and social margins. The project begins with Song’s participatory workshop 〈Shepherd’s Flower Arrangement〉, which reinterprets the Korean floral principle Samjaemi and informs the exhibition’s spatial structures, including an installation referencing the traditional game Tuho. This installation metaphorically connects the act of throwing arrows to brushstrokes, spontaneity, and liberation from formal ink-painting conventions. The exhibition also incorporates Song’s hybrid-creature works—such as Hybrid Pigeons and Dovarium—which speculate on alternative ecologies and interspecies relations. By translating Song’s visual language into layered prints, Hwang reframes imitation as an active form of understanding, allowing the works of both artists to converge into a single hybrid organism within the exhibition.

This participatory installation adapts the Korean game Tuho using handmade arrows inspired by my work. Visitors throw the arrows into 3D vessels modeled after my transformed panel paintings, each acting as a scored target. The resulting arrow placements are then translated into evolving sculptural forms, created by bending wire to mirror their shapes. Through this continual transformation, the piece explores alternative approaches for audience-driven installation.

As a collaborative work, artist Kyumin Hwang reinterpreted Jean Song’s imagery by translating the colors, pencil lines, and brushstrokes of her Hybrid Pigeon series into layered multicolor prints. By placing Song’s original models alongside Hwang’s prints on a single wall, the installation presents itself as a large, unified organism.

<Dovarium Cross-Section> (2023) was presented as part of artist Kyumin Hwang’s Incheon Art Platform Residency Artist Project, Hwang’s Manual of Song’s Work–Throwing Arrows (2023), in which the artist participated collaboratively. Taking this collaboration as a point of departure, the work revisits and recombines cross-sections from the ‘Dovarium’ series produced in 2021–2022. The panels were created with the motif of a photo-album grid format.
