Workshop 〈Forming the ecology of the Hiibrid(Hi+hybrid)〉, 2023

This workshop is a participatory program in which participants create new hybrid beings and design unique ecological systems around them. Through drawing and worksheets, they conceive each creature’s appearance, characteristics, and name, then explore what kind of social groups or human archetypes the being might represent. Participants further develop detailed ecological information—such as habitat, modes of reproduction, and feeding behavior—to construct an imagined artificial ecosystem. Ultimately, the drawings and worksheets are reconfigured into a new painting.

Workshop Activity Sheet

(This worksheet guides participants to select from a set of prepared body-part images, categorize them, and imagine the organism’s ecological characteristics—such as key features, active season, habitat, hunting methods, diet, and its relationship or conceptual association with humans. Participants are instructed to record their ideas and ultimately name the imagined species.)

A new hybrid creature is created. Using 200 reference images of eyes, tails, bodies, legs, mouths, noses, skin, and heads, the elements are coded and numbered to give birth to a new life form. Along with constructing its ecological patterns, the work raises the question of what appearance and way of life these beings might develop, and how they could coexist with humans.

Based on the worksheets and drawings created by myself and the workshop participants, I produced life-sized panel paintings of hybrid animals and installed them as part of the connected exhibition.
